Civil Marriage
(between two non-residents)
The Civil Status Act stipulates that a marriage between non-residents can
be celebrated on the day following the publication of banns. During the
ceremony the couple must submit to the Officer of the Civil Status Office,
a non-resident certificate issued by the Office of the Prime Minister stating
that he is not a citizen of Mauritius and does not reside in Mauritius.
This certificate can be obtained in advance by making a written request
to:

Each application must be accompanied by two copies of the birth certificate,
two photocopies of your passport (the first three pages sufficient) and
any other document in the event of divorce or widowhood.
The application for a certificate of non-resident must reach the Civil Status
Office at least 10 days before the date preset for the marriage. The celebration
takes place in the presence of an officer of the Civil Status Office at
the Civil Status or at the hotel where the spouses reside.
NB: After the solemnization of marriage at the Civil Status Office of
Mauritius, register same at the embassy of France (14, rue Saint Georges,
Port Louis, Mauritius). You will receive your family book at the town
hall in your place of residence.
Catholic Wedding
When two catholic foreigners’ wishes to celebrate their religious
marriage in a Catholic place of worship in Mauritius, the ‘Evêché’
of Port Louis can provide information on the procedure to adopt. They
will have anyway to make representations to the Chancellor of the Diocese
at their place of residence.
